Nyonya Pottery modernized!

The Nyonya or Peranakan people of Singapore and Malaysia refer to the descendants of ethnic chinese men who migrated to this region approximately 300 years ago, and married local Malay women. This fusion of cultures resulted in some really amazing cuisine and gorgeous pottery.

On my recent trip to Singapore, I purchased a few Nyonya pottery pieces – serving bowls and spoons.  The colors of this Peranakan-ware is clearly influenced by the bright colors seen in Malay culture, while the shape of each piece is distinctly chinese.

Just the other day, I came across a post by Joy of Oh Joy! blog, who had featured some Nyonya pottery designed by two Singaporean designers. However, these designers gave the traditional pottery a “treatment”, which resulted in some “Spotted Nyonya” pottery.  The result is quite stunning! Here are some images of the traditional pottery that I purchased as well as the “treated” pottery. Pretty cool!

Serene Living Spaces

I was browsing through House to Home, a British decor magazine, and came across some really great living spaces, full of inspiration. There were plenty to look at, but here are my particular favorites!

Love the old stone wall in the back!

I really like the use of dark grey walls with pops of color,

especially from the japanese paper fan on the mantel.

Something so peaceful about this one….I just love the wood walls and those lovely coffee tables!
